How to Make Pub Quizzes Fun?

Pub Quiz culture came into existence in the 70’s in the United Kingdom. They are usually organized only once a week. The time is announced through advertisements. They are organized on days when there are fewer people expected to walk-in. Pub Quizzes are an effective way of advertising, creating goodwill and making more and more people to return to your pub. It is important that a Pub Quiz fulfills the purpose of a quiz and at the same time is remains interesting and a fun to participate in.

Here are a few vital tips to make a great Pub Quiz.

1.      Change is the Only Constant: Keep changing all the different aspects of the quiz to keep the contestants guessing and interested. Never let the quiz become monotonous and boring. Here are a few ideas:
a.       Rounds: Try different types of rounds. This topic will be dealt later in detail.
b.      Method of Asking Questions: Hearing the same voice for 90 minutes can become boring so for a change, ask any of the visitors to host a round. Many pub quizzers distribute sheets with questions on them.
c.       Topics: Make sure that the questions come from a variety of topics.
d.      Difficulty Level: An easy pub quiz is the one in which not more than 70-75% of the questions are answered. Induce a few difficult rounds to separate the best from the rest simply to make sure that they visit again.
The most important elements of a successful and interesting pub quiz are rounds and questions. Here are a few ideas to make your quiz fun by ensuring interesting rounds.
  • General Knowledge Quiz: Questions are asked from a variety of topics such as history, geography, literature, current affairs, and basic science. There can be more than one such round.
  • Topic Based quiz: Questions are asked from a particular topic such as sports, movies, music etc.
  • Picture Round: Printed or photocopied hand outs are distributed with images that are not easily recognizable. Do not always go for famous personalities. Famous places, logos and monuments can be included.
  • Music Round: Intros of famous songs, symphonies or film soundtracks are played to be identified.
  • Puzzles: Handouts with crosswords, brain teasers, dingbats or simple math questions are given.
  • Who am I? : Clues related to a particular personality are given and the famous personality has to be identified.
  • Joker Rounds: In some quizzes, the teams are allowed to select one or two rounds for which there points will be doubled or tripled.
  • Bonus Questions: Clues are given at the end of the round which makes the guess work easier after each round. The team that answers first gets an instant prize or bonus points.
